When we first started Mattina Moderna, my mother and I were far from imagining that we would one day be creating lightings. It really began as a hobby, thrifting vintage lamps and objects in our home region – the French riviera- reconnecting with it and each other after the successive lockdowns of 2020. Then, with the amazing response from our followers and an increasing demand for unique finds, we started creating custom lampshades from deadstock fabrics with a local artisan to fit our thrifted treasures. One thing leading to another, we ended up launching our very own line of limited table lamps, handcrafted in Portugal, in spring 2022. Every step felt very natural, and when we thought about how to create lamps from scratch, ceramics were the obvious choice, as it was already very present in the pieces we were thrifting. Ceramics has that timeless and humble feel, rooted in tradition and a shared past. For us, that's what slow-design is about, create the right number of pieces, with heart and extreme care, sharing it in a very personal way. - Clémentine Poncin, designer and co-founder.
