Lost Girls - D. J. Taylor
Lost Girls was the name given to the young women at large in Blitz era London by the writer Peter Quennell. This book by historian D. J. Taylor concentrates on just four of them: Lys Lubbock, Sonia Brownwell, Barbara Skelton and Janetta Woolley. Chic, glamorous and bohemian, they cut a swathe through English cultural life in the 1940s. One of them married George Orwell and another became the mistress of King Farouk of Egypt. All of them were associated with Cyril Connolly and his influential magazine, Horizon.
D. J. Taylor paints a picture of these women being a precursor to the liberated free-for-all of the 1960s.
