The Story of the Country House - Clive Aslet

Clive Aslet was the editor of Country Life magazine from 1993 to 2006; in that capacity alone he must have learnt much about the country house. He has written over twenty books on architecture and history. This title is an authoritative and vivid account of the British country house; it explores how thew buildings and their surroundings have evolved with the changing political and economic landscape. Aslet reveals the captivating stories behind individual houses, their architects and occupants; he paints a picture of the wider context in which the country house in Britain flourished and then subsequently fell into decline.

Among the houses that Aslet explores are great houses such as Belvoir Castle, Chatsworth, Strawberry Hill and Balmoral Castle as well as those that were lost to war and economic decline.
