Glyn Philpot - Simon Martin

This monograph has been published to coincide with a major exhibition of the artist's paintings, drawings, sculptures and photographs that is taking place at Pallant House Gallery in Chichester in 2022. Simon Martin is the curator at Pallant House. His book on the artist positions Philpot as a major figure in the history of twentieth-century art.

Glyn Philpot (1884-1937) was an English painter who is best known for painting a Who's Who of British and American society but his interests were wider than that customer base including classical myth and religion, expressions of queer identity and the sensitive representation of people of colour.

Simon Martin's exploration of how these depictions of Black sitters relate to wider dialogues about identity and representation is central to his book. The book features many recently rediscovered 'lost' works.

The introduction to the book is written by Alan Hollinghurst.

Hardback. 224 pages.

Measurements: 23.5cm x 28.6cm x 2.7cm
