The Prince Rupert Hotel for the Homeless – Christina Lamb

When Covid-19 hit the UK and lockdown was declared, hotelier Mike Matthews wondered how his business would survive. His four star hotel in Shrewsbury had around 30 members of staff, four poster beds, suits of armour and a celebrity guest list.

Mike took a call from the council. They had launched a scheme called ‘Everyone In’ in order get Shrewsbury’s rough sleepers off the streets during the pandemic and they wanted his help. The council thought that they were grasping at straws in approaching the Prince Rupert Hotel but . . . the hotel went with it. Instead of their usual guests they now had the homeless of Shrewsbury; many of them traumatised, addicted to drugs and drink and suffering from mental illness. Arriving at the hotel scared, wary and used to ill treatment they instead found generosity and love.

It is a tale that gives panormaic insight into modern Britain in allits failures and peopple in all their capacities for kindness – even in the most difficult times.
