Do you require a felt pouch in the design of Kagoshima’s colourful anti-hero Saigo Takamori?
If the answer is yes, then the good news is that the Kagomania brand of illustrator Motohiro Waki, have produced just that.
Waki draws Saigo-san with expressive thick lines, and on the reverse of this pouch is the phrase ‘gowasu’. In polite Japanese gozaimasu is the verb to be, and gowasu is a Kagoshima dialect rendering of it.
So the front of the pouch has a thick set Saigo-san gazing at you, and the reverse announces ‘it’s me!’.
The pouch is 19cm by 17cm, and 2cm wide. It weighs 60g.
**About Kagomania**
The modern stories and identity of Kagoshima are told in the work of Motohiro Waki and his Kagomania brand. A designer, illustrator and observer of his home region, Waki makes work characterised by its humour and bold lines in drawing scenes from history and local geography. Waki frequently draws an expressive Saigo Takamori, the complex folk hero of the late Satsuma era, together with his dog Tsun for example. Alongside volcanoes, daikon radishes and other symbols recognisable of Kagoshima - Waki’s work provides contemporary narration of what it means to have roots in old Satsuma.
