Shadows of Reality - W. G. Sebald

Sebald's first book was published in 1990 and was succeeded by 3 more included the impactful Rings of Saturn and Austerlitz. His writing style was revelatory because it blurred the boundaries of memoir, travel writing, fiction, historical accounts and more. It was also important because of the way that he inset photographs in the middle of his text in a way that challenged and beguiled the reader.

His photographic images were all made in collaboration with the photogrtapher Michael Brandon-Jones.

This volume presents, for the first time, a catalogue of his photographic materials: a combination of negatives, prints and slides. It reveals the story behind the images and their often surprising origins.

Alongside the images is an interview with Brandon-Jones and a sequence of new essays.

The book is edited by Sebald's erstwhile colleague at UEA, Clive Scott.

Softback. 468 pages.
