The subtitle to this book is "the magazine that changed culture" and for anyone who was of a certain age between 1980 and 2004 then the magazine certainly shaped the world around them if not shaping the person themselves. The photo of Kate Moss on the back cover is certainly one that changed the career of Kate Moss and the modelling industry as a whole when it was published in 1990.
Paul Gorman tracks the story of the magazine from the initial incarnation of the creator, Nick Logan, in 1980 when it provided a strong voice for British urban identity in the age of Thatcher through to the survival of the magazine in the 1990s in the aftermath of the disastrous Jason Donovan libel suit. The iconic visual identity of the magazine was created by Neville Brody and the magazine was responsible for introducing the Buffalo styling of Ray Petri to a wider audience as well as showcasing photographic work by Robert Mapplethorpe, Bruce Weber and Cindy Sherman.
The book features the most significant covers and features from the publication's lifespan and provides a definitive overview of the most influential magazine of its time.
