These beautiful and ethical storage baskets are hand woven in Tanzania from local milulu grass. They make perfect planters for your indoor jungle and they look fantastic all over the home, keeping everything from loo rolls to newspapers, magazines, toiletries and scarves tidy. The weavers themselves use these baskets in their homes in Tanzania for keeping kitchen staples like maize and beans dry.
Boasting black patterned stripes against a natural grass base, VIZURI was produced by a skilled weaver belonging to a cooperative of 580 members. The reeds used to produce these woven storage baskets are often found in swamps and riverbeds, but also grown specifically for basket weaving. Its leaves are cut, split, dyed and dried before weaving begins.
The income earned from selling their woven baskets helps women pay their children’s school fees and family medical bills, and it helps them purchase school uniforms. These earnings can also assist families in improving their homes, and investing in their own livestock and poultry, since most weavers are primarily farmers who need this second income during the dry seasons.
What’s more, profits from basket sales are reinvested for the benefit of the weavers’ communities. From solar lighting to new land, kerosene lamps, warehouses for storing baskets and raw materials for producing further baskets. The cooperative committee leaders also organise frequent product development training as well as healthcare education.
