Tom Stuart-Smith: Drawn from the Land - Tim Richardson
Such is the volume of Tom Stuart-Smith designed gardens that I have visited two of his gardens this summer that don't make it into this book: the garden at the Hepworth Wakefield and a new planting design in part of the gardens at Chatsworth. His practice began in 1998 and swiftly became known for combining naturalism and modernity and built forms with romantic planting.
This book features 24 projects from the multitude that he has created worldwide. It is the first major overview of his career. In the two essays that he has written himself for the tome he reveals his influences, methods and thoughts about gardens and gardening. He places great emphasis on the initial drawings that he makes for a project and those sketches are included here. Descriptive texts place each garden in context and explain how the features of the planting come together to create a Tom Stuart-Smith garden. The gardens featured include some private gardens, including his own, but also some that are public spaces and can be visited such as those at Trentham and RHS Wisley.
Thoroughly illustrated with stunning photography throughout. A great gift for gardeners.
