The V&A Sourcebook of Pattern & Ornament
The archive of objects that are held by the V&A museum is vast and encompasses a huge range of pieces from across the centuries. This book is a compendium of the V&A's eclectic collections, it is not intended as a comprehensive glossary of design but as a catalogue that can be referred to and that might inspire creativity.
Through the pages of the book designers, manufacturers and anyone interested in ornament, pattern and design can engage with the collection. The cherry-picked selection has been divided into four categories: Plants, Animals, Earth and the Universe. The selection spans hundreds of years and includes the output of well-known and lesser-known companies, artisans, artists, designers and makers. Within the framework of the four categories there are pages given over to specific themes; citrus and chrysanthemums in the Plants section and the moon, science and weather in Earth.
A great book to just dip into, or alternatively to study and then be inspired to either visit the V& A and see the pieces in the flesh or to create your own work.
Hardback. 400 pages.
