The V&A Book of Colour in Design

Edited by Tim Travis and co-published by V&A publishing and Thames & Hudson, this book considers the role and importance of colour in design. Suffice to say it is a visual joy to behold. After the introduction the book is then split into chapters on separate colours, or colour families. The first colour (or non-colour for pedants) is white. The introductory text to each section deals with a historical overview of the use of that hue in design and the social significance that it has. White, for example, is noted for being one of the most common colours for mourning but was also the colour of choice for the Jonathan Ive designed range of Apple products starting with the original iPod in 2001. The plates that follow are accompanied by their own text and the history of each illustrated item is examined in detail.

From white the book moves through all of the significant colour groups showing the diverse range to which that colour has been employed.
