Strata: William Smith's Geological Maps

If you enjoy pouring over maps then this volume is a new level of joy.

The foreword to the book is written by Robert Macfarlane and in it he introduces the important work of William Smith in identifying what stands beneath our feet.

'We stand atop a vast, invisible dominion of soil and rock, rifts and mines, chambers, veins, minerals and groundwater, to the fragile roof of which ewe are moored by gravity - and yet we give it hardly any thought.'

William Smith was one of the first people to see in strata. He paced the countryside with a notebook and a hammer, identifying samples of ground and stone and from these samples coming up with maps that allowed advances in mining, agriculture, cartography and more. To the modern eye they are also remarkable beautiful plates and are accompanied here with James Sowerby's contemporary illustrations and newly rendered infographical data and essays.
