Making a Great Exhibition - Doro Globus and Rose Blake
I had grand dreams of being an exhibition designer at one point. That was before I undertook my school work experience - it should have fitted like a glove, 'exhibition designer' based at the NEC outside Birmingham was what was proffered; two weeks working in the portakabin-based box office was what transpired. What I did learn in those two weeks was not about designing exhibitions it was about the necessary drudgery of some jobs. I did however manage to secure my sister front row tickets for Gloria Estefan, so . . . . you know, every cloud!
This book by Doro Globus and Rose Blake does not record the travails of the HR department at Birmingham's premier commercial exhibition venue but . . . it does look at the jobs roles involved in putting together an art exhibition. The artists are front and centre as are the curators, art handlers, conservators, educators, lighting designers and more. The book lifts the lid on these roles in a way that shows the freedom of the term 'artist' and what that can encompass, but also the magnitude of voices and positions that come together to get an exhibition off the ground. And . . . the whole thing looks great.
