Japanese Design Since 1945 - Naomi Pollock

If your heart has ever raced at the prospect of entering a branch of Muji then this is the book for you.

It seem reductive to think of all Japanese design being minimalist, and this book certainly contains examples which don't fit into that generalisation, but there does seem to be a cultural trope of clean lines and pure design. The Japanese Ministry of International trade and Industry recognised in the period post WWII that they needed to promote design exports and established a Good Design Award products system in 1957. The 'Made in Japan' label on precision engineered cars, cameras, appliances and a vast array of other smartly designed and manufactured products came to be trusted worldwide.

This book contains over 400 illustrations and shows the breadth of design that has originated in Japan since 1945 it includes work by design titans such as Naoto Fukusawa, Issey Miyake and Shin Azumi and also the Japanese brands that have been at the forefront of design: Sony, Yamaha, UNiqlo and more.
