Michael Peppiatt is a well-known writer, curator and authority on twentieth-century art and has been described by the Art Newspaper as 'the best art writer of his generation'. His other books include a biography of Francis Bacon and a forthcoming account of Giacometti's life in Paris before and after the war.
This book is a selection of his biographical writing in which he introduces the reader to some of the best known artists of the modern age: Van Gogh, Pierre Bonnard, Lucian Freud and Freancis Bacon. There are also pieces on other artists such as Balthus and Tàpies.
Peppiatt guides the writer into the studios of these artists and allows us to observe the creative processes at close quarters, bringing both the art and the maker alive.
