Now You See Us: Women Artists in Britain 1520-1920
This is the catalogue for an exhibition at Tate Britain that opened in May and runs until October. The exhibition comes at a time of intense interest around the world in the work of women artists, but Tate is determined that the exhibition is not a one off but rather signals a continuing commitment to inclusion in the way they tell the story of British art.
From Tudor times to the First World War, artists such as Mary Beale, Angelica Kauffman and Laura Knight paved a new artistic path for generations of women. Spanning 400 years and fifty works, the book dismantles some of the stereotypes surrounding women artists in history, who are often thought of as amateurs. They dared to paint subjects considered the territory of male artsts: history scenes, battle pieces and the nude.
A series of new essays in the book shed light on all of their subjects.
