Product details

Kutani-ware is one of Japan's great porcelain traditions. Alongside Arita on the southern Kyushu island, and Tobe-ware found in Shikoku, the porcelain made in the area of Kutani in Ishikawa is known for its bright colours on a white background. Seikou are among the modern exponents of the Kutani tradition, and produce boldly patterned ceramics. In common with many of the decorative arts in Ishikawa, their output is expressive and brings forward traditional Japanese motifs. These small 'mamezara' are plates of an ideal size for dipping sauces, or storing small items such as rings or accessories.

They feature some of the most well known Japanese imagery: The great wave; akafuji (red Mount Fuji) and Umegiku (plum and chrysanthemum flowers).

Size: ø: 9.5cm, h: 1.8cm
