Rodham - Curtis Sittenfeld

Rodham is of course Hilary Clinton's maiden name and in this novel Curtis Sittenfeld writes of a scenario where instead of marrying Bill Clinton, Hilary turns him down. How might things have turned out for them (Hilary and Bill), for America, for the world itself if Hilary Rodham had turned down Bill Clinton. There are three distinct parts to the book; a telling of the young Rodham meeting Clinton and their time together, then, after she turns him down, of a single woman in politics and the third part questions the sublimation of drive and ambition for the sake of a husband's own career, drive and ambition.

It's the two later sections which obviously allow Sittenfeld the most leeway and which are all the better for that freedom.
