Product details

This book is a history of children's picture books told by Clare Pollard, an award winning poet and playwright. Her exploration of the books that she read as a child and that she is reading to (and with) her children shines a light on our best-loved childhood stories. The best picture books are arguably those that are much more complex than they seem . . . . and darker too.

In her introduction to the book she writes:

"Opening a  picture book from your childhood can be dangerous.

To relive those bedtime stories so exactly, image by bright image, is to feel overwhelmed by how much else is irrecoverable: that room, your small body in pyjamas, your bear propped on the pillow, your parent's voice."

The book also contains illustrations from some of the stories that it features and also bears a great cover by Emily Sutton.

Hardback. 290 pages.
