Chicken Boy: My Life with Hens - Arthur Parkinson
Arthur Parkinson doesn't need to convert me to the joys and benefits of keeping hens - I signed up years ago and the various birds that I have kept since across different breeds has shown the fascinating temperament of all of them and kept us in eggs.
Parkinson is similarly evangelical about the benefit of hens and has kept them since he was a child. This book is part memoir and part guide to hens and henkeeping. Parkinson splits the book into different kinds of flocks of chickens and allocates them an ideal environment. He lists certain breeds as being kitchen garden birds (legbars, barnevelders and marans) and others as flying flock (those with a propensity to enjoy wide ranging freedoms - Andulusians, Hamburgs and leghorns).
The book is peppered with Arthur's own illustrations of the different breeds as well as a breadth of advice for looking after hens and enjoying their company.
Hardback. 234 pages.
