In the foreword to this book Diana Henry says that she started writing this book twenty years ago. The impetus then was a trip to Denmark where she discovered how the Danes cooked specific foods for the winter months: herring, cod, beetroot, potatoes, cabbage and rye.

She encountered more cold-landscape cooking; collected recipes for glögg, visited coffee houses in Vienna and witnessed cranberries being harvested in Massachusetts.  This is an updated and revised version of that book, that was published first in 2005.

It is a classic book for recipes to see you through the winter months; there are recipes for smoked haddock tart, pot roast chicken, damson and gin sorbet and Christmas bread and butter pudding.
