Joe Tilson - Marco Livingstone
Born in 1928 Joe Tilson is one of the great figures of post-war British art and was a pivotal figure in the British Pop Art movement in the 1960s. He is still working and his work has continued to evolve and explore many new directions and media.
This is the first monograph on Tilson to bring all the strands of his work together. It has insightful texts written by Marco Livingstone.
Among Tilson's iconic works from the Pop Art period are a series of works exploring the Ziggurat form and also some incredible pieces that contained envelope structures (complete with postal marks) that were half exposing the contents either by having them poke out of the envelope or by the envelope being made from glassine (a semi-transparent substance). After the Pop Art period Tilson's work takes a lot of inspiration from language and alphabets, particularly the Greek alphabet. Greece and Italy play a role in later Tilson works as well and a chapter of this book is given over to Le Crete Senesi - the name given in Italian to a cluster of chalk hills south of Siena in Tuscany.
