This monograph on Lucy Jones has been published to coincide with her exhibitions at both Flowers in their gallery on Cork Street, London and her solo exhibition at the Attenborough Arts Centre, Leicester which is running from the end of July to early October.Lucy's studio is just outside Ludlow and she has been described by art critic Jackie Wullschläger as "the most exiting English colourist of her generation". Alongside the full colour images of some of her recent paintings, included her commissioned portrait of Grayson Perry, are texts by Philip Vann, Charlotte Jansen and Tom Shakesepare. Jansen's text recalls a visit to Lucy's studio and is titled The Inescapable Gaze it mentions the impact that seminal feminist texts by Laura Mulvey, Linda Nochlin and Griselda Pollock had on her work and how she saw her life and what she could paint of it. The gaze that comes across in Lucy's work is framed as a defiant female gaze and through this she addresses issues of disability, sexuality, female bodies and tradition. Alongside her figurative work many of her other works are landscape pieces and identifiably South Shropshire landscapes at that - the Long Mynd, the weir on the Teme in Ludlow and the border with Wales.
