Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan) says, "Use cedar and camphor tree for boats, hinoki for palaces, and Japanese umbrella pine for coffins". Hinoki contains a lot of hinokitiol, which has a high antibacterial effect as well as an excellent deodorant effect. It is also said that the scent of hinoki has a relaxing effect, and research has shown that inhalation of the scent component α-pinene contained in hinoki makes parasympathetic nerves dominate and leads to relaxation.
