Exploding Tomatoes and Other Stories - Sophie Grigson
Sophie Grigson (daughter of the renowned food writer Jane Grigson) has lived in Puglia, southern Italy, for the past five years. In this book she explores the regional specialities and differences that make up the three most southerly Italian areas: Puglia, Basilicata and Calabria.
In the introduction she says "Food, as ever, is my medium for discovery, containing as it does the DNA of towns, villages and families, carrying traces of history, of terrain, of culture and climate."
There are no glossy photographs to accompany Sophie's writing, but luckily her writing is so inspiring that the decision to cook one of her recipes is not at all fraught. You can trust her to give you the tools you need to cook delicious food.
In the Puglia section she includes instructions on how to make fig leaf oil, in the Basilicata section there is a recipe for potato and horseradish frittata and in the Calabria section there is one for fileja alla Silana (pasta with sausages and porcini).
