Hiroshi Sugimoto - Time Machine
If you are interested in the visual arts then there are often single exhibitions that stick with you. One of these, for me, was an exhibition of Hiroshi Sughimoto at the Serpentine Gallery in 2003.
The presentation in those galleries was largely of the seascape works although there was a limited edition print made to go with exhibition, that I still regret not forking out for, that was of a flame and was titled In Praise of Shadows.
This book is produced in part to mark a major exhibition of Sugimoto's work at the Hayward Gallery. As well as the seascapes it contains examples of the other subjects that Sugimoto has concentrated on: theatres and drive-ins, lightning fields, waxwork portraits.
There are accompanying essays including a conversation between David Chipperfield, the architect, and Ralph Rugoff and by Edmund de Waal on the Sea of Buddha works.
If you can't make it to the Hayward Gallery then theis provides the opportunity to pore over his works and if, you do manage to see the exhibition, it provides a great reminder and discussion of his work.
