Art is Magic - Jeremy Deller
In Jeremy Deller's hands art is indeed . . . magic. It is also confrontational, immersive, thought-provoking and dynamic. Among the works for which he is best known are The History of The World, which is a diagram showing the connections between Acid House and Brass Bands, Sacrilege, which was a life size inflatable version of Stonehenge and The Battle of Orgreave, which was a recreation of the miner's strike skirmish between miners and the police.
He was also the artist behing We're Here Because We're Here, a piece of public art that took place on the 100 year anniversary of the Battle of the Somme and involved participants dressed in authentic First World War uniforms moving through public spaces such as train stations and shopping centres. There is an immediacy to some of Deller's work which includes posters that rely on common graphic tropes and he has a facination with folk art but equally there is plenty to get your teeth into.
This book describes and illustrates many of his works and retains much of the wit in this form that his work has in itself.
