Malawi chairs are handmade using rattan strips, which are woven into intricate patterns along the sides of the chairs and the seat. Rather than using glue or nails which is common in European design, makers secure the strips with special knots. To create a curved barrel back, they temporarily insert spare parts from cars and bicycles that guide them as they work. It takes approximately 10 days for an artisan to make a chair. Note the chairs are all bespoke handmade and each one will be slightly different as they made by a few different groups of artisans.
