Tra il 1926 e il 1933 furono costruiti solo 199 Trimotor nella fabbrica della Ford. Il metallo ondulato su grandi ali monoplane spesse era uno sviluppo tedesco, utilizzato negli aerei Junker JU-52 che volavano sulla rotta Berlino-Roma-Londra. I Trimotori erano utilizzati dalle compagnie aeree, dalle compagnie petrolifere e da privati facoltosi. Il Ford Trimotor e lo Junkers JU-52 furono aerei pionieristici che portarono a generazioni di flotte di aerei Douglas e Boeing, che presto attraversarono il mondo.
