The Hedonist belongs to the series Character, a set of five unglazed ceramic sculptures designed for Danish brand Kähler in collaboration with the Danish sculptor Malene Bjelke. Reflecting the rich diversity of personalities which make us who we are, the simple, timeless figures celebrate both the individual traits and shared characteristics of people throughout life, making them relevant and personal gifts at special times and milestones. The Hedonist, a standing figure, head held high in a relaxed and positive pose, tells us to live in the present.. Life may be ful of ups and downs, but it is important to make the best of everything, to enjoy the moment and be mindful that tomorrow is new day.
As a graduate of the Danish Design School in 1993, Bjelke has since combined her work as a sculptor with a 20 year career in theatre and costumes. Her work reflects a preoccupation with the human mind and the interaction between it and the space in which we inhabit.
Kähler have been at the forefront of Danish design in ceramics since they were founded in the small town of Næstved in 1889, the year of the famous World Exhibition in Paris where they first made their mark. Their workshop soon became a meeting place for many influential Danish designers and their reputation as leaders in the field continues to this day.
