The satirical monkeys seem very modern but are a popular theme that was often seen on Delft blue porcelain four hundred years ago. This was called an appetizer. “Appetizer is pulling ridiculous pranks and imitating human behavior,” Janny explains about the design of her new tableware. “The playful monkeys in the new collection bring a smile to everyone's face. This genre of monkeys in satirical situations was already a popular theme four hundred years ago and we are happy to bring these light-hearted jokers back to the table.” Not only are monkeys a symbol of absurdity, but in Asia, these primates have been depicted on porcelain for centuries to represent wisdom and longevity.
