Author Dusti Bowling’s lovely forthcoming middle grade novel, Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus, tells the story of Aven Green, a young girl who was born without arms.
As I worked on Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus, I discovered so many interesting and successful people who live without arms—a woman who is a pilot and a black-belt in Taekwondo, a man who is an Olympic archer, and a woman who is an artist and makes interesting, funny videos about life without arms. I often wished I could tell the woman from that original video what an inspiration she had been to me as I wrote my story, but how could I ever find her? I didn’t even know her full name!
