Greenfeast - Spring, Summer - Nigel Slater
Some of us greet the arrival of a new Nigel Slater book like the arrival of the first swallows of summer; with a flurry of excitement and the expectation of months of pleasure lying ahead. Greenfeast is a book of recipes and writing about vegetables. The text on the back of the belly band asks "What vegetable shall I eat today?" - the answer is not "Not a single one" as a petulant eight year old might but rather Slater's writing gives the reader an appetite for all manner of vegetables. This isn't a book that denies the pleasure of meat - at one point Slater waxes lyrical about a bacon sandwich - but is one that acknowledges that many of us are not eating anywhere near as much meat and fish as we once did.
There are recipes for beetroot, curry leaves and crisp onions and a for artichoke tagliatelle and also for roast new potatoes with spinach sauce. If you get the appeal of Nigel Slater you will get the appeal of this (and all of) book. Ruby Tandoh recently wrote about the appeal of his writing for Vice.
