DESCRIPTION:
This Japanese woodblock print was made by the brilliant Yoshu Chikanobu, a great artist of the Meiji Era.
It portrays a Kabuki actress who plays princess Tsuki in "Musume Dojo-ji". Legend tells that the princess fell madly in love with a monk who lived at a temple on the Kii peninsula. To reach the temple, the princess turned into a serpent. Once she arrived, she changed herself back into human form and desperately looked for the monk who in fear had hidden under a bell. Due to this rejection, the princess turned back into a snake and squeezed that bell killing the monk.
In the print we can see the princess standing on the shore under the moonlight just after she swam to the temple.
This vintage Japanese print has been enhanced digitally.
