DESCRIPTION:

Created by one of the greatest masters of the ukiyo-e art, Yoshitoshi Tsukioka, this reproduction of a Japanese woodblock print was part of Yoshitoshi's most popular series, 'One hundred aspects of the moon'.

This print illustrates Kumasaka Chohan, an outlaw priest and the ringleader of a band of thieves. One night, he is defeated by a young warrior called Minamoto no Yoshitsune. The story became the subject of a Noh play called 'Kumasaka' and in this print, Yoshitoshi portrays the actor playing Kumasaka in full Noh costume striking a dramatic pose.
