This book is illustrated with woodcuts by the artists Tom Hammick many of which were made from fallen timber from the park at Alfoxden where the Wordsworths lived. Nicholson's text involves itself with the 15 months from June 1797 to September 1798. This period saw the creation fo some of the most famous poetry in the English language The Ancient Mariner and 'Kuble Khan' from Coleridge and the Lyrical Ballads from Wordsworth.
Coleridge and Wordsworth spent much of these months in the Quantock Hills of Somerset and Nicholson explores the idea that these poems came from this place and that by experiencing that place at all times of the year and in all manner of weather the genesis of the poetry can be greater understood.
Nicholson creates a portrait of these figures as young people, troubled, ambitious and knowing that they had greatness in them.
