Oliver, the main character in the book, finds a robin made from iron in a field near his house. He has a keen interest in birds, but of course they fly away, whereas this iron robin can be his constant companion. During a dramatic storm, the iron robin comes to life.
Oliver takes the iron robin to school to show off the bird but it gets stolen by some older children. It takes another dramatic storm for the iron robin to come back into Oliver's life.
