Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988) was a visionary artist whose work has been presented in exhibitions across the world for almost 100 years.
Born in Los Angeles, he was the son of a Japanese poet and an American writer. He spent part of his childhood in Japan where he encountered traditional wood working techniques before returning to the USA at the age of 13 to attend school in Indiana. He initially trained in medicine but concurrently underwent training with the Italian sculptor Onorio Ruotolo in new York and later assisted Brâncusi in Paris.
In his sculptures Noguchi is dedicated to the qualities and the possibilities of the materials that he works with. He was widely travelled and was interested in the art of the countries that he visited. This book was put together to coincide with a touring exhibition of his work organised by the Barbican Gallery, Museum Ludwig and the Kunstmuseum Bern, and the survey of his work celebrates him as a global citizen who pushed the boundaries of sculpture.
