Product details

Newton, Riviera

This book has been produced in collaboration with the Helmut Newton Foundation to mark an exhibition of Newton's work at the Mouveau Musée National de Monaco.

Newton was a resident of Monaco from 1982 to 2004; part of the visual language that he originated is an aesthetic that is firmly grounded in the South of France. It's a visual language of sunshine, glamour and flesh. It is this combination that made him a favourite with fashion designers and fashion magazine editors. In his application for residency in Monaco he is said to have said "I like the sun, and there's none left in Paris,". He was already a famous and well regarded photographer but the entire principality of Monaco became the backdrop for many of his images from then on. The most famous example if this is perhaps the Versace campaign that he shot there in 1986.

His photography was never far from controversy; being populated with many seductive images of women both clothed and nude.

There are a series of essays at the beginning of this book but in the main it is page after page of Newton's arresting imagery.
