Empire of Pain - Patrick Radden Keefe
Patrick Radden Keefe's 2019 book, Say Nothing, won the Orwell Prize that year with its analysis and examination of the Troubles. In this new book he sets his sights on the Sackler dynasty.
The consciousness about the Sackler family had perhaps bubbled under the surface of general awareness until the flare up of the argument regarding their sponsorship of the National Portrait Gallery in 2019. Nan Goldin refused to allow her work to be shown in the galleries beacuse of the Sackler family's role in the opioid crisis in the USA.
The family is behind various drugs that their critics would argue have been over prescribed such as OxyContin and they have therefore benefitted massively from the addictions that some people have obtained from their use. Before the family was involved in OxyContin they were involved in valium and the financial benefit of these drugs has led to the family leading lives of drama and excess. It is 'a study of impunity among the super elite, and a relentless investigation of the naked greed and indifference to human suffering that built one of the world's great fortunes.'
