Susie Dent is the resident dictionary-corner expert on Countdown and 8 out of 10 Cats Do Countdown. She is also the co-host with Gyles Brandreth of an excellent podcast called Something Rhymes with Purple. The strapline for this book is 'etymological entertainment for every day of the year' and it does just that.
There is a chronological daily entry where one word is discussed and introduced by Dent. As well as giving information about words that are familiar with the reader she also lists words which a now rarely used and turns of phrase that have long since had their hey day.
Dent arrived at her tv presence via a job as a dictionary editor at Oxford University Press and the studying of the dictionary that she done of dictionaries over the years is carried off by her in a charming and generous way. Whether you look at an entry every day or dip in and out of the entries they are all interesting for anyone with the vaguest interest in the English language.
