Liberty: The History

This book was first published in 2013 and was re-designed and reissued in 2019. Liberty has managed to be two things for a long time; a great department store and also a designer and manufacturer of iconic fabric designs. The department store came first; opened in 1875 on Regent Street selling goods imported from the Far East and tapping into the contemporary demand for all things Oriental. Arthur Liberty not only had a fascination with the goods that he was selling but also expertise in them and because of this he met some of the exciting designers and artists of the time including Burne-Jones, Morris and E. W. Godwin. Liberty & Co's influence on decorative taste of the time was huge and also made the shop very successful. The shop expanded and developed the Tudor-style shop on Regent Street and Argyll Street opening that store in 1924.

The art fabric department commenced in the 19th Century as well, producing their signature peacock feather print in this period. The introduction of the tana lawn fabrics followed in the early 1930s. The in-house fabric designs were also accompanied by the development of Liberty designed furniture and metalwork.

This book explores all of these strands of the company including the fashion and brand collaborations that they have undertaken with companies such as Marc Jacobs and Cacharel.
