Slum Boy - Juano Diaz

Slum Boy is the memoir of Juano Diaz, or . . . of John MacDonald, which was the name given to Juano as a child in the 1970s by his adopted parents.

Before he was adopted he lived with his mother in her life of alcoholism and poverty in Glasgow. His mother's addictions unsurprisingly affect his life, and lead to his forcible removal from her care and into that of the care system.

John's new parents were from the Romany Gypsy tradition and they fully adopted them into their family with no judgment and no separation. But the joy of his childhood with them was shattered by the death of his adopted mother in a car accident.

The memoir is about Juano's finding of himself and his true identity.

As The Guardian noted in their review of this book: 'This is a book about the way that early trauma endures and repeats itself, finding new ways of shaping itself to each fresh iteration of life.'

Hardback. 246 pages.
