Lloyd was the occupant of Great Dixter in East Sussex and Chatto lived in Essex and had an influential garden and nursery. The letters between these two friends is engaging and fascinating; they compare notes on their two very different gardens, share gossip and discuss life and nature. They both have encyclopaedic knowledge about plants and gardening but also are not tied to conventional garden wisdom.
