John Craxton: A Life of Gifts - Ian Collins

John Craxton (1922-2009) was an artist who grew up in London but who, from an early age, had a longing to live and paint in Greece. At 19 he met Lucian Freud and the more famous artists followed Craxton to Greece in 1946.

Craxton was a singular artist with a love of archaeology. He was first influenced by Blake and Palmer and then later on by Miró and Picasso. Although he had famous friends he painted ordinary people and fell easily into life on Crete. This biography explores not only the work that he produced but also the scrapes that he got into throughout his life; his interest in sailors, privately and professionally, was thought by some to be evidence of an interest in military intelligence.

'You can live a charmed life if you are charming, and Craxton was charming. He showed me that to live the life of an artist was possible and even pleasurable.' Tacita Dean
