Early Islamic Textiles
The al-Sabah collection in Kuwait holds a spectacular array of ancient textiles that were made in Islamic lands and traded along the Silk Road. The majority of these range in date from the 9th to the 15th centuries. The collection has been largely unpublished until now and is a rich source of information not only about the history of textiles but also about the Silk Road itself.
The items presented in this book comprise of some 400 garments and textile fragments representing the Iranian, Chinese, Syrian, Greek, and Indian influences that came via the Silk Road. There are magnificent brocade kaftans decorated with exotic birds and block printed cotton dresses, embroidered shawls and an astonishing range of motifs and patterns.
