Colourmania: Photographing the World in Autochrome - Catlin Langford

Autochrome was a revolutionary colour photography process that was released in 1907. Invented by the Lumière brothers the technique was quickly embraced by photographers including Alfred Stieglitz. They did however prove to be extremely fragile and were therefore difficult to exhibit. This book draws in the extensive collections of autochromes held by the Victoria and Albert museum from the two decade period at the start of the 20th Century when the process had photographers entranced.

The book begins with an overview of the process and then splits the rest of the book into four distinct subject areas: portraiture, gardens, still life and travel. A final selection looks at the difficulties of preserving and conserving these objects. The book takes the reader back to a time when the wonder of a colour photograph was new and exciting.

Hardback. 240 pages.
