Isabel and Julian Bannerman have created gardens since 1983 including their own at Trematon Castle in Cornwall. In this book Isabel writes about the importance of scent in the garden . . . and scent from the garden that you can bring in to the house.
In the preface to the book she writes "Smell is our constant unacknowledged companion. Smell is everywhere yet unseen. We breathe, we smell; that which we breathe in is full of smell. . . . Sight, sound and touch are physical sense but smell and taste are chemical; in the exchange in some extraordinary way what we smell becomes part of us."
The book is arranged chronologically through the year; so the start of the year is marked by indoor hyacinths . . . which Bannerman describes 'Hyacinth smell is bluebell on steroids; gives one a lift, that acid drop scent indoors in January.' This is followed by early Narcissi and witch hazel, mimosa and wintersweet.High summer brings phlox, nicotiana lilies and bay laurel.
Bannerman writes not just about individual plants, flowers and their scent but also more generally about the garden and the effect on the senses of particular scents. It is a book that could easily be read from front to back, and leave the reader longing for each of the scents that it describes.
Beautifully written and illustrated with photographs, some of which are delightfully abstract in composition.
