The Seasonal Gardener - Creative Planting Combinations - Anna Pavord
Anna Pavord is, perhaps, the doyenne of garden writers. This book is a reworking of a previous title that she wrote, called Plant Partners, twenty years ago. The core premise of this book is the same. She takes 60 plants and with each of thos individual plants she suggests companion plants to place alongside in order to bring out the best of all of the plants and prolong the period of interest. The book is divided into four gardening seasons - this doesn't include winter but does consider 'Spring Turns into Summer' as a separate period.
The first iteration of this book did not include shrubs; this one does. The new book also reflects a shift in the way that we look at our gardens. Changes in gardening style have made different plants more easily available and the awareness of companion planting and creating environments that suit friendly insects, Pavord notes that in just twenty years we have also learned to garden in a much looser style.
Alongside Romneya coulteri Pavord suggests planting Nepeta racemosa 'Walker's Low' and Hemerocallis citrina. As companion plants for Eryngium giganteum she suggests Pelargonium 'Lady Plymouth' and Echeveria elegans.
At the back of the book is a section where the author expands on the suggestions issued in the previous pages and gives up to 15 more recommendations for each 'star' plant.
